Benefit for KidZNotes with The Chorus Project, The Beethovens, Shy Guys, Hidden Keys, Ari Picker & Emma Nadeau, Chris Stamey & Katie Wyatt

When: Mon., Dec. 17, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $5-10

With a day job as a middle school chorus teacher and a not-so-distant past as the leader of the quirky band SNMNMNM, Seamus Kenney thinks he's perfectly suited as the chorus director of The Chorus Project. "This is kind of my two worlds blending together," he explains. "I'm basically conductor of a rock 'n' roll chorus."

Open to high school singers between the ages of 14 and 18, the program seeks to create community one chorus at a time by giving teenagers chances to perform, record and work with professional musicians. "We meet once a week—Thursday nights for two hours," says Kenney. "A lot of these kids are in all kinds of other musical endeavors, so just getting them to come in and make time for us is tricky, but it just shows the level of dedication and the hunger that a lot of these kids have to just be performers and really great performers."

The focus shines through beautiful, complex arrangements delivered with confidence. Typical sets cover a range from Arcade Fire to R.E.M. to Adele. Kenney or special collaborators arrange the material to suit this 30-strong group. For this show, the Chorus Project Choir will be joined by Hidden Keys, Shy Guys, Ari Picker & Emma Nadeau, and Chris Stamey & Katie Wyatt. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with a performance by The Beethovens, a chorus of students in grades 3–5 from the KidzNotes program, for which this show is a benefit. Tickets are $10, or $5 for students. —Ashley Melzer
