Beneath Oblivion, Necrocosm, Only Ash Remains

When: Wed., May 20, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
Ohio’s Beneath Oblivion flirt with funeral doom, a metal subgenre so doleful and slow its name speaks of eternal silence and stillness. But they divide their long, creeping riffs and lumbering rhythms with occasionally bright tones and entire sections that pick up the tempo enough to border on death metal, as though they’re beating back interment with one last struggle for survival. They’ve got nothing new since 2011’s very good from Man to Dust, where loaded riffs and lizard-like vocals suggested its own special hell. Grayson Haver Currin
