Ben Rector, Judah & The Lion

When: Fri., Oct. 30, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $22
Ben Rector may have named his latest release Brand New, but it’s mostly more of the same for the Nashville singer-songwriter. He has built his career on melodic, melodramatic folk-pop, mixing upbeat ditties with piano-driven ballads. It’s well-intentioned but heavy-handed. During “The Men That Drive Me Places,” for instance, Rector extols the working-class ethic of those who shuttle him from gig to gig before hammering home the message with another verse about playing the hand that one is dealt. —Spencer Griffith
