Belcea Quartet

When: Sat., Nov. 10, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $30

Beethoven went deaf gradually, losing his ability to hear high frequencies first. Although it's reductive to read his career entirely within the context of his disability, his later music certainly gravitates toward bass. But with thunder comes lightning, and this later work is more remarkable for its technical complexity than its brooding. The Belcea Quartet presents two of the German master's late string quartets, including his "Grosse Fuge." It was originally the sixth and final movement of his 13th quartet, but Beethoven broke the challenging bit off the quartet shortly before he died, in order to publish it separately. The Belcea has devoted a year to recording all of Beethoven's quartets. Tickets to the 8 p.m. performance are $30, or $10 for Duke students. —Chris Vitiello
