Beautiful Irritant

When: Fri., Sept. 19, 6-9 p.m. 2014
Sure, you don't want to miss PhotoVision: Selections from a Decade of Collecting, a new photography show that opens at the Ackland Art Museum on Friday. But that'll be up for the rest of the year. If your art-viewing time is limited on Friday, devote it to Beautiful Irritant, a one-night-only pop-up show at Golden Belt by Chapel Hill's Amanda Saxe Barr and Carrboro's Cody Platt, both of whom will be around to chat with. The exhibit is part of "Off the Radar," a series of Third Friday pop-up exhibits that briefly utilize vacant artist studios in Golden Belt. These two pair well together, as both are fond of using found materials to create art, whether painted or sculpted, with rough irreverent edges. Examples of the work that may be on view include Platt's fish and chickens made from grotesque refuse and Barr's paintings that suggest mosaics. And oh, look—there's a butt on the wall. —Brian Howe
