Immediately upon its release in the summer of 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild captured American hearts and imaginations as a story of survival and loss. The film follows Hushpuppy, a brave and ferocious six-year-old who also narrates the story, and her ailing, mercurial father, Wink. The two live in The Bathtub, a tight-knit, ramshackle community washed away by a terrible flood; from there, Hushpuppy and Wink have to figure out how to grapple with the end of their world as they know it. The film's score captures the delight, disquiet, and almost magical surrealism that Hushpuppy encounters as she navigates joy and tragedy. It gets the live treatment at Duke courtesy of members of the North Carolina Symphony and the Lost Bayou Ramblers, who handle the more distinctly Deep South elements of the score (see p. 37). Beasts holds up as a gorgeous modern masterpiece, and this two-night occasion is the larger-than-life showcase it deserves. —Allison Hussey
