Beast in the Field

When: Tue., Jan. 21, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $5

In recent years, some listeners, writers and readers have been surprised by traces of intelligent life within heavy metal, condescendingly crowning bands whose view extends beyond riffs and wizards as systematically superior to the stylistically stubborn. Though you might hear traces of Krautrock or identify instances of improvisation within the instrumental melees of Michigan two-piece Beast in the Field, these wordless hymns to packed bowls and regal Baphomet are more brawny than brainy. Employing a massive stack of amplifiers and a drum kit whose cymbals are large enough to be mistaken for flying saucers, Jamie Jahr and Jordan Pries punish their instruments of choice. Their blues themes and mid-speed tempos serve more as excuses for turning up and checking out than exercising compositional acumen. It's a mission they loudly, vividly accomplish. —Grayson Haver Currin
