Be Loud!: John Howie Jr. & The Rosewood Bluff, Southern Culture on the Skids, Neil Diamond Allstars, Chicken Wire Gang

When: Aug. 28-29, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $20-$40

Niklaus and Lucy Steiner started Be Loud! Sophie last year, after their 15-year-old daughter's valiant fight against germ-cell cancer ended with her death in 2013. Inspired by Sophie's experience, the group supports young cancer patients undergoing treatment at UNC hospitals by addressing their needs in an environment that typically caters to the very young or the very old. Named after an inspirational line—" loud and move with grace..."—from one of Sophie's poems, the group arrived with a benefit concert, a tradition that sprawls this year to concerts across two nights and a day-show. Maintaining last year's eclectic mold, the lineup features the chicken-wing-tossing institution Southern Culture on the Skids, the inspired country of John Howie Jr. & the Rosewood Bluff and reconstituted '90s alt-rockers Dillon Fence and The Veldt. Saturday's family-friendly matinee includes several Girls Rock NC bands and Seamus Kenney's new Flash Chorus. And then there's Preeesh!, a supergroup whose members have yet to be named. Good times, good cause: What could be bad? Fri., 8 p.m., $20. Sat., 1–5 p.m., $10 & 8 p.m., $20; 300 E. Main St., Carrboro; 919-967-9053; —David Klein
