BB King, Jason Spooner

When: Fri., June 3, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $38-68

It's been just less than three years since B.B. King christened the stage of the Durham Performing Arts Center, the 2,700-capacity downtown theater that invited a mix of skepticism and Bull City boosting ahead of King's appearance. Since then, though, the venue has invited an admirably consistent range of musical performers into its massive and stately confines, from broad-spectrum legends such as Neil Young and Leonard Cohen to younger performers including David Gray and Maxwell. In essence, they've proven that this size room can work in this region, and not just as a new touring Broadway big box. King, now 85, returns for another victory lap, likely playing a similar set of standards and standbys with the same easygoing gusto he had back in 2008. Jason Spooner opens the 8 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
