Battles | Cat's Cradle | Clubs & Concerts | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Sun., June 10, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $15-17

Last year's Gloss Drop—the ambitious second album by art rock all-stars Battles—doesn't possess the same nervy verve as their early EPs or their 2007 debut, Mirrored. Now a trio sans Tyondai Braxton, Battles make tracks where the edges are less sharp, aimed more toward sending you to a pop-music midsection than some quivering, transcendent fringe. At times, Gloss Drop even sounds like a trendy update on System of a Down or 311, references that are likely anathema to former members of Helmet, Don Caballero and Tomahawk. Still, when Battles hit the ecstatic highs of even their weakest pieces, they're an enthralling act; live, expect them to get there much quicker. Fin Fang Foom opens the 9 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
