Bastard Film Encounter

When: April 25-27, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $75-140

Bastard films are "ill-conceived or received; embarrassing or beyond the bounds of acceptability; poor in conception or execution; undesirable to those who should be caring for them; proof of something that should have never happened." Also they're never screened anywhere ... until now. Skip Elsheimer, Marsha Gordon and Dwight Swanson have put together the utterly unique Bastard Film Encounter—a three-day shedding of light upon an ignored cinematic realm. Thursday night's screening follows a keynote by Andrew Lampert of New York's anthology Film Archives. Friday's schedule starts at 10 a.m. at Kings and includes A/V Geeks' Skip Elsheimer's take on George Lucas' bastard legacy, a "private parts" set including East Lansing (a.k.a "The Penis Film") and the intriguing Enema Medley before moving for the evening to Lump Gallery for Bingo and more screenings. Saturday's thematic groupings include suffering, conversion narratives and "writhing bodies." Each day opens with some abject treasure unearthed by Tom Whiteside of Durham Cinematheque and screenings are followed by discussions. Oh my god, you gotta go. —Chris Vitiello
