Christian Petzold's film, set in 1980 East Germany, is at once a compelling historical thriller and an emotional and spiritual journey. Nina Hoss is the title character, a talented physician who, for applying to emigrate abroad, is being punished with an assignment to a provincial clinic. The filmmakers eschew the usual grim concrete palette of Cold War filmmaking for a warmer treatment of East Germany in the summer, where people can ride their bikes late into the summer evenings like they do in other places.
