Barbara Bennett

When: Sat., Oct. 9, 7 p.m. 2010

For lovers of adventure and animals alike, Barbara Bennett's new book is sure to strike a chord. Soul of a Lion: One Woman's Quest to Rescue Africa's Wildlife Refugees tells the story of Marita van der Merwe and her determination to provide a refuge for injured wild animals, such as lions and baboons, in Namibia. Bennett, a literature professor at N.C. State University, shows depth and compassion in her writing; it's clear that volunteering at the refuge and spending considerable time with the animals is one of her deepest passions. For a preview of her work and numerous photos and videos of the jungle cats, see —Lauren Shute
