Band of Heathens, Roger Troy Smith

Band of Heathens was a three-headed Americana-roots powerhouse. But after the departure of singer-guitarist Colin Brooks and the rhythm section, it's a two-headed, '70s soft rock act with singers and guitarists Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist remaining. This prompted a left turn for their fourth studio disc, Sunday Morning Record, a dewy-eyed tribute to the Eagles, Jackson Browne and Little Feat. The tracks are pretty and serene, with low-key Southern soul adding needed grit to balance the watery Laurel Canyon predilections. —Chris Parker
