While a first-time director is always a dodgy proposition for a film’s prospects, Jason Bateman (TV’s Arrested Development) holds his own both behind and in front of the camera with Bad Words. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a middle-aged slacker who finds a loophole in the rulebook of the National Spelling Bee and enters himself in it to revenge a slight done to him in his mysterious past. While the script stretches credibility in order to make Trilby come off as outrageously inappropriate around children, Bateman takes advantage of being given free reign and delivers one of the better performances of his career.
