Letters to the Editor

Why not in D.C.?
I am a longtime Independent reader and a retired naval officer. I am also very much opposed to the President's decision to go to war in Iraq. What I do not understand about the recent group protests against the war, ("What's it take to get an antiwar movement going?" March 23) though, is why they are not held in front of the White House and on Capitol Hill. Why in Fayetteville of all places? Foreign policy in this country is NOT made by soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines, but by the president and the congress.

Tune in to WNCU
I enjoyed your coverage of the Al Franken rally at UNC and I am a fan of his radio show ("Al Franken, the anti-O'Reilly," April 20). I was disappointed that there has been no mention of WNCU 90.7 FM taking up the mantle of progressive news in the Triangle. WNCU carries Pacifica Radio's Free Speech Radio News and Democracy Now! from 6-7:30 p.m. on weeknights. They are currently having a fundraiser and they could use some publicity! www.nccu.edu/campus/wncu/

Thanks for article
Peter Eichenberger's article "City-sponsored terrorism in Southeast Raleigh" (April 13) is a prime example of why journalism, in general, and a free press, in particular, are so necessary for the proper functioning of a democracy. Kudos to Peter for exposing such insidious racism and greed within the administration of our capital city. It always amazes me that there are so many people who think that racism vanished some 40 years ago, after the gains of the Civil Rights movement. The fact that we have journalists like Peter who do not shy away from dismantling such dangerous fantasies makes me proud to be an American, a North Carolinian, and a citizen of Raleigh.
