Baaba Maal

When: Tue., April 27, 7:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $25-$40; $10 for UNC students

Senegalese musician Baaba Maal came to prominence during the world music craze of the 1990s. With a slight strain, Maal's melismatic voice climbs and tumbles through exuberance, sadness and hope. Songs vary from exultant and percussive dance music to contemplative explorations on acoustic guitar. On last year's Television, Maal collaborated with New York electronic outfit Brazilian Girls, as rhythms journey from West Africa to Latin America and multilingual lyrics explore social justice in a changing world. —Andrew Ritchey
