Re: “The thrill of the kill: The triumph of Osama bin Laden

This is the single most thoughtful commentary I've read about the disposal of Osama bin Laden. A few others caught my eye -- mostly, as Hal points out, in Letters to the Editor -- but this cri de coeur is the essence of objectivity and detachment and, yes, innocence. I had a brief moment of Yes-you-got-it, a flicker of joy, while being reminded of our kinship with fellow creatures. As Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote...'Man must not disclaim his brotherhood even with the guiltiest.'

I've often wished I was half as articulate as Hal Crowther; we are fortunate indeed that he takes the time to point out some virtuous parts of ourselves we might have lost along the way and should try to rediscover.
