The hardest thing to stomach about Avatar is James Cameron's delusion that—with a few possible exceptions—there is nothing to laugh about in this schmaltzy, wanna-be epic about an ex-marine who falls in love with a giant blue cartoon. Self-serious and chock full of New Age hokum, Avatar is trippier in the scenes that take place on the military base, where 3-D effects give the film an eerie ground-shifting feel, than it is in its fantasyland of the planet Pandora, where giant blue humanoids prance around in faux-hippie jewelry and make feline hissing sounds when they're angry. Many Oscar nominations for this one.
