Re: “The Year in Music 2009

"It's obvious that I wasn't really wearing that button, right?"

Lisa, I talked to a number of people who thought that the button was real when they first saw the cover. Not everyone took the time to look closely and see that the button was a little too big to be real. These people were friends, acquaintances, co-workers, professional colleagues, and people I met for the very first time. I know that there are other people out there who thought this was a real photo, but didn't ask me about it.

Many people recognized that this was just a collage, a work of art. But having even one person consider that this was an actual image is one too many for someone who values their professional career.

Re: “The Year in Music 2009

@Lisa: As you can see from my comments above, my concern is unique among any other complaints you may have received about the F word on the cover. I do not have an issue with the fact that you printed the F word. My concern is that the Indy used a photo of me and included a button with the F word that could be misinterpreted as an actual button that I was wearing when the photo was taken. The Indy ignored the consequences I might experience at work or in my community when my photo was used in this controversial image.

Re: “The Year in Music 2009

Below is the text of a letter to the editor that I submitted on 12/20. It did not get printed. (Actually I could not find any letters to the editor in the Indy on 12/23.) I would appreciate a response from The Independent.

As a member of the Scene of the Crime Rovers, I was thrilled to see our band on the cover of "The Year in Music 2009" issue. Thank you for including us.

However, I was disappointed that the cover art featured a button saying "I'm Fucking Metal" right over the chest of the large and very recognizable photo of me. Many people involved with local music have professional careers. And some of us simply cannot risk the possibility that an image like this might be misinterpreted to mean that the person in the picture was actually wearing that button. Did you consider that the woman in the picture could be an attorney? An elementary school teacher? By using my photo in this way, The Independent willfully ignored any consequences I might experience when this image is seen by tens of thousands of people across the Triangle.
