A/V Geeks: "Clothing Makes The ..."

When: Thu., Feb. 2, 6 p.m. 2012

Barkcloth, Bras and Bulletproof Cotton: The Powers of Costume just opened at the Gregg, and the inimitable 16mm hoarder Skip Elsheimer—aka A/V Geeks—has worked up "Clothing Makes The ..." a program of short films about the hilarious and scary slippages between fashion and identity. In "Replay," the Arrow Shirt Company embraces hippies. "Twenty Dollar Miracle" describes just how dresses got so cheap. And "Fur Coat Club" will have you thinking fetish thoughts. In his selections, Elsheimer always hits that note of ironic retrospection clearly. The event also celebrates the book release of Learning With the Lights Off: Educational Film in the United States, co-edited by N.C. State professors Devin Orgeron and Marsha Orgeron, along with Dan Streible; they'll be on hand to sell and sign copies. Elsheimer contributed an essay to the book. The free event begins at 6 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
