AUSTENLAND | FRIDAY, MARCH 27, RALEIGH

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART—If you need a palate cleanser after watching Mr. Darcy chop racists with a fire hatchet in Kingsman: The Secret Service, try Austenland, which closes NCMA's 2015 Winter Films series. Based on Shannon Hale's 2007 novel, director Jerusha Hess' 2013 film stars Keri Russell as a Pride and Prejudice super-fan looking for her real-life Colin Firth (who played Darcy in the popular 1995 TV miniseries). She travels to a British resort where Austen's world is recreated—North Carolina readers might think of an English Romantic-era Old Salem—and, of course, she becomes enmeshed in Austen-style intrigues. Hess delivers the rom-com goods while skewering the treatment of literature as a theme park. The film's vivid period dress is the main reason for its inclusion in this series, where NCMA film curator Laura Boyes (a sometime INDY contributor) marks her 15th year with a program celebrating the glamorous, historically rich costumes that first drew her to movies. 8 p.m., $5–$7, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, 919-839-6262, www.ncartmuseum.org. —Brian Howe
