Asylum Street Spankers

Asylum Street Spankers

When: Sun., Oct. 10, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $15

Consider the name Asylum Street Spankers. There's always been at least a whiff of naughtiness implied by this Austin-based new old-time collective. I mean, I doubt Spankers is being used in its nautical sense, plus there's the matter of the acronym. It fit, then, that the group's 1997 Nasty Novelties rounded up a bunch of naughty ditties from the '20s and '30s. Without musical and vocal chops, though, wink-wink/ nudge-nudge gets old fast. That's never been an issue for longtime members Guy Forsyth (resonator guitar), Wammo (vocals, washboard), Stanley Smith (clarinet) and Christina Marrs (guitar, banjo and a voice built for belting vintage blues tunes), as well as the other talents who've Spanked over the years. Plus, the group has always provided balance courtesy of its own brand of divinity. They claim their unplugged approach presents music "the way God intended, without the use of demon electricity," and they initially built a following with the Original Sunday Gospel Brunch at Austin's La Zona Rosa. Their latest release—an "agnostic gospel album" called God's Favorite Band—offers favorites both traditional ("Down by the Riverside") and otherwise (Violent Femmes' "Jesus Walking on the Water"). Get your amen on at 8 p.m. Tickets for this farewell tour stop are $15. —Rick Cornell
