Astronautalis, Sims, Mr Invisible

When: Wed., March 9, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $10

Beck comparisons must be the price paid by a young white dude with eclectic tastes and a penchant for rhymes. But experimental Seattle emcee Astronautalis rises far above that reductive association with avant-garde hip-hop that showcases both legitimate rap prowess and genre-spanning inclusiveness. While Astronautalis is first and foremost a rapper, the chameleon-like performer fits bits of jazz, blues, alt-country, shoegaze and indie rock into beat-based frameworks that avoid becoming haphazard stylistic mashups. Doomtree's Sims and Charlotte's Mr. Invisible—talented bar spitters both—open. —Spencer Griffith
