Asleep at the Wheel

When: Sat., May 18, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20-$23
Durham's largest rock club seems an unlikely place to find Asleep at the Wheel, but any visit to the Triangle by the Austin western swing band is welcome. Now in its fifth decade, the band—an evolving lineup of ace musicians behind towering frontman Ray Benson—has accomplished everything from winning nine Grammys and collaborating with Willie Nelson to envisioning and performing in a play based on their mentor, Bob Wills. Benson even starred opposite Dolly Parton in the 1991 TV flick Wild Texas Wind. Fiddle, pedal steel and keyboards fill in the country-jazz crevices amid the band's seven-piece lineup. —Peter Blackstock
