Artemis Quartet

When: Fri., April 17, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$42
Duke Performances’ season of string quartets has featured a high number of works with nicknames, a trend this performance continues with works by Dvořák, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Dvořák’s “American” quartet treats melodies he heard in Spillville, Iowa, in 1893 as exotic source material. Shostakovich’s fifth quartet is more cheerful than much of his output, though no less complex or beautiful. And Tchaikovsky’s “Accordion” quartet, his first, is considered one of the first great Russian string quartets. —Dan Ruccia
