Art Tatum: Piano Starts Here

When: Dec. 8-19 2010
Price: $36

A new kind of collaboration will be on display in Piano Starts Here, a one-man performance directed by Jay O'Berski highlighting the music of the late jazz pianist Art Tatum. Actor Trevor Johnson dramatizes Tatum's career and influence through the reminiscences of a fictional club owner circa 1956. But the real star may be the techno-art of Durham's Zenph Sound Innovations, which takes Tatum's analog recordings through the digital knothole via their ultra-sensitive HD-MIDI software and plays them back "live" on a custom-built, computer-controlled piano. Johnson has charisma and subtlety—but the invisible Tatum, time-traveling from half a century ago, may steal the show. Performances run Dec. 8–19, at 8 p.m. Wednesdays–Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. —Kate Dobbs Ariail
