Armitage Shanks & the Vaudevillian Revue: Carnival Oscuro

When: Thu., May 30, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-$10

These days, the word "burlesque" brings dim striptease images to mind. But historically, it was really about bringing the weird to your doorstep, dazzling and even threatening you with it, then vanishing the next day as the show moved on to the next town. The VaudeVillain Revue has defibrillated this tradition with neo-vaudeville events in the Triangle since 2011, and they're going over the top with Carnival Oscuro, presided over by renowned "carny preacher" Armitage Shanks. The evening includes circus-style acrobatics and aerials, dark music by chanteuse Virginia Scare and Durham's own carnivalesque throwback Curtis Eller, and acts from the "holy trinity" of Meka La Crème, Porcelain and Purrrl VanDammit. Shanks is an incomparable barker who invests you with a special amalgam of thrill and fear that you can't simply click on. —Chris Vitiello
