Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Diva, Toddlers

When: Wed., Nov. 10, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $12-14

Midway through Ariel Pink's raucous, sold-out performance at Local 506 a few months ago, the home-recording superstar ordered the strangely indoctrinated crowd to imagine it was the late '70s and the 506 was Studio 54. But his performance was closer to Max's Kansas City-style art rock than uptown disco. (Granted, it was, occasionally, some punk-funk fusion of the two.) Either way, Haunted Graffiti didn't sound much like they do on Before Today, their masterful release from earlier this year. Live, they reach for the rumbling, avant-chug of, say, Richard Hell & The Voidoids or Can (are they always trying out for a spot on an old episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test?) and pretty much pull it off. Bros at the 506 were moshing, chugging beer and straight screaming. Yes, the guy best known as an Animal Collective-approved, quasi-outsider artist who made fart noises into microphones for nearly a decade and was more recently dubbed The Godfather of Chillwave has a formidable band behind him now. This time, he takes to the big stage at the Cradle—again, not Studio 54 either, but a bedroom pop man-child savant can dream, can't he? —Brandon Soderberg
