Arctic Monkeys, Sleepy Sun

When: Tue., April 6, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $22

While the Arctic Monkeys never justified the buzz surrounding their 2006 debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, it's easier to understand the furor for it against the soggy atmospheric pap that was then passing for rock across the pond—Keane, Snow Patrol. The Monkeys' jagged post-punk guitars, strutting, hot-blooded rhythms and cheeky insouciance came off as a stylish amalgam of the Libertines and the Strokes. To impartial (not British?) observers, their second disc, Favorite Worst Nightmare, is tauter and stronger start to finish, if lacking anything as immediate as "Fake Tales of San Francisco" or "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor." Sadly, the Josh Homme-produced Humbug is a touch indulgent, laying there in laconic, bottom-heavy murk. It's like a drunk in the corner, excited but on the verge of passing out. Openers Sleepy Sun could be something Homme smoked with the Monkeys, wafting groove-oriented blues-psych that goes on and on, like Phish dosed on Blue Cheer. —Chris Parker
