Aquila Theatre: Sense & Sensibility

When: Tue., Oct. 3, 8 p.m. 2017
Price: $7 - $31

N.C. State University's current celebration of Jane Austen is called Austen 200 because the world has known the author for only two hundred years, despite Sense and Sensibility's immediate success in 1811 and the even greater reception Pride and Prejudice received two years later. During Austen's lifetime, her novels were published anonymously. In Sense's first edition, the words "By a Lady" appear beneath the book's title; Pride's first edition was written "By the Author of Sense and Sensibility." Austen was only identified as the author after her death in 1817. NC State LIVE keeps a slot open for Aquila Theatre each season with good reason; the company has staged daring and innovative adaptations of classics such as The Trojan War. Artistic director Desiree Sanchez's take on Sense is still under wraps; the company's tour begins after press time. Austen fans, take note: Sense arrives just after the university theater's current production of Pride and Prejudice closes on October 1. —Byron Woods
