Apocalyptica, Art of Dying

When: Tue., May 19, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $25-$30
Kind of hilarious, kind of heroic, Helsinki’s extremely popular Apocalyptica use three interlocking cellos and pounding drums to create grand, dramatic heavy metal, often bolstered by arching vocals. On record, the shtick tends to wear thin, with the band’s mix of miniature symphonies and power metal anthems often sounding like the ordinary stuff just bolstered by a battalion of strings. But live, it’s sort of a spectacle, with theatric poses and commanding lights giving the sinister ensemble an edge of sheer awesomeness. —Grayson Haver Currin
