There will always be a market for competent pop songs with their roots showing. Such singles are popular now (catch that Taylor Swift ad for Diet Coke?) and were back in the day (The Eagles' first greatest hits collection has sold more than 40 million copies). Intentional or not, Antigone Rising takes advantage of this undying appeal. Born in the '90s as an all-female country act with clean tones, tranquil harmonies and approachable melodies, Antigone Rising's members reimagined themselves as hook-enthused crowd pleasers on 2011's 23 Red. Their lush sound remains, and the tunes are all remarkably catchy. Calculated? Maybe. But it works. —Jordan Lawrence
