Ansel Adams: Masterworks

When: Feb. 4-May 7 2017

An artist is not always the best person to assess his or her own work, but in the case of Ansel Adams, the great photographer of the American West, the king of the coffee-table book, we're willing to make an exception. Adams called this grouping "the Museum Set," intending it as the ultimate expression of his legacy. And unlike many a great novelist, painter, or musician, who experience a golden age in youth, Adams, who worked as a photographer for five decades, was so devoted to the refinement of his technique that his final work might accurately be called his ultimate creations. These forty-eight masterworks, taken in locations like Glacier National Park, Yosemite, and Monument Valley, certainly speak to Adams's monumental purity of vision. And while his images have become familiar from wall calendars and screensavers, they remain awe-inspiring when you see them up close. After this opening-day reception, the exhibit runs through May 7. —David Klein
