Annuals, Ryan Gustafson, Jenna & the Jintlemen

When: Fri., Oct. 8, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $10

After taking the indie rock blogosphere by storm with 2006's Be He Me, the once-promising Annuals have followed with a string of lackluster releases. Though now even more adventurous, the sextet has struggled to approach the high-water marks of Be's best. It may be unfair to write Annuals off quite yet, though; the band still reminds on occasion why it once held sky-high potential—just don't hold your breath that they'll reach it. Ryan Gustafson is on the opposite side of that trajectory: On the heels of Donkey—a rootsy rock 'n' roll debut that was one of last year's finest local releases—Gustafson seems poised for a career of classic anthems and soul-searching ballads. Jenna and the Jintlemen—four Annuals and pal Johnny Hobbs backing relatively green Raleigh songstress Jenna Smith open. —Spencer Griffith
