There's a good movie in the idea of a modern, multiracial reboot of Broadway musical Annie. This isn't it. The crazy-talented 11-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) is adorable and competent in the title role, but she's mired in a remarkably vulgar update that's all about consumer electronics, social media and celebrity PR strategies. Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz and Bobby Canavale give one-note, half-hearted performances—no one looks happy to be here. The songs have been filtered through some soul-sucking R&B Muzak machine, and director Will Gluck stages everything like he has a plane to catch in 15 minutes. It's safe for kids, though, so desperate parents looking for a two-hour time-killer should consider it a last resort.
