To clarify my comment in the article: my feelings are that the reader-focused shift is not NECESSARILY a bad move.

I said repeatedly during my interview that I don't know the News & Observer, nor can I speak to their plans or direction. The devil will be in the details, and it's not clear to me what they mean by "reader focused", in particular if they are only looking at aggregated site traffic as a proxy for "what readers want," which the column suggested might be the case.

I maintain that it is a good thing to be transparent about your mission, any changes to it, and what you plan to present to your readers. Whether that's what they want or need is a very different question. I wish the News & Observer luck in their efforts to serve their audience more effectively.
