Anamorph, Escher, Trees on Mars

When: Tue., July 21, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
From Columbia, South Carolina, the instrumental trio Trees on Mars sport all the signs of prog-metal indulgence—complicated guitar lines that twist their way between distortion and clarity; counterintuitive rhythms that start, stop and send songs in unexpected directions; and coercive dynamics that shift songs from whispers to roars. But on last year’s remarkable The Sapling, they graced that technicality with welcome concision, keeping most of their songs under the four-minute mark. There’s a core of unexpected accessibility here, as the band’s mix of momentum and economy make the music short and smart. Locals Escher and Anamorph venture into the same territory with a bit more aggression and obscurity. —Grayson Haver Currin
