"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." Filmmaker Julia Haslett's life turned upon reading that line of Simone Weil's writing. Philosopher, activist, soldier, mystic, ascetic—Simone Weil was all of these things in a super-saturated life that ended in 1943 at age 34 from self-starvation out of solidarity with the people of then-occupied France. Weil was one of the most unrelentingly compassionate spirits of the 20th century, and her life, from combat in the Spanish Civil War to a religious vision at a basilica in Assisi in 1937, stands as a testament to moral responsibility. Expressing Weil's universality, Haslett screens her new documentary An Encounter with Simone Weil, with a score by Duke music fellow Daniel Thomas Davis, on the way to its theatrical opening in New York. Haslett and Davis will do Q&A after the film. The 7:30 p.m. free screening is co-sponsored by the Franklin Humanities Institute, Duke Human Rights Center, Arts of the Moving Image and Audiovisualities Working Group. —Chris Vitiello
