Drama

The big guns of this year's Oscar season have been rolled out, but make way for this Michael Haneke sleeper, nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (Emmanuelle Riva), Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. In it, we meet Anne and Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a elderly, gentle and cultured couple. Anne's health fails, and we see her cruel, inexorable deterioration as Georges attempts to help her cope. But what lifts this fine, lovely film far above being just a grim wallow in mortality and gives it enormous power is its attention to the emotional and psychic transformation of the couple.

Michael Haneke's powerful, Oscar-nominated Amour
