Americans in France, Bandit Teeth

When: Mon., July 12, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Bandit Teeth arrives from Lawrence, Kan., with a batch of fuzzy-and-crunchy would-be indie anthems, where the playful buzz of the guitar is matched only by the snotty sneer of the songs. "Encouragement," for instance, opens with the yowled line "I just wanna blow my head off/ And all my friends will blow their heads off" before denouncing depression and pronouncing that, really, they just need a place to party. That shouldn't be a problem in Chapel Hill, where they'll join the similarly Modern Lovers-minded Americans in France. But where Bandit Teeth seems to push everything together, coiling its pop songs and thickening the narcotic effect of its melodies until it sits between No Age and Jay Reatard, Americans in France stretches it all out, making trip wires of melody and rhythm and lyrical kiss-offs. The trio just finished recording its second album, so let's hope for a preview tonight. —Grayson Currin
