American Roots Music & Arts Festival

When: Sat., Oct. 17 and Sun., Oct. 18 2015
Price: $39.50-$1000
For years, there’s been talk of a big festival propped up by Live Nation hoping to drop anchor in Raleigh. The American Roots Music & Arts Festival, which runs today and tomorrow, is a decent first attempt. Seemingly modeled in part on Farm Aid’s 2014 success at Walnut Creek, the event combines local food, vendors and beer with a lineup that stretches from the iconic Willie Nelson to iconoclastic Modest Mouse, from two-night headliner Eric Church (really?) to two-guitar family affair Tedeschi Trucks Band. The Roots offer the obligatory rap weight, while Trombone Shorty reps New Orleans. It will be interesting to see how the festival fares this weekend and if indeed our big, aging amphitheater can sustain an annual event. —Grayson Haver Currin
