Amen Dunes, Weyes Blood, Xander Duell

When: Fri., March 27, 10 p.m. 2015

Until last year, records made by New York musician Damon McMahon under the name Amen Dunes were scattershot but mesmerizing affairs, where strange textures and off-the-cuff ideas created musical playgrounds of songs that seemed half-finished. It was good, but it was hard to fight the feeling that McMahon had sold his own material short. Last year’s Love found him focusing on the craft, building songs that felt less like experiences than events, discrete objects you wanted to put on repeat and obsess over. Beautiful and wounded, the best songs of Love moved with a Rolling Stones-like ease but a Leonard Cohen care for precision and impact. Right now is an exciting transitional point in the trajectory of Amen Dunes. Weyes Blood opens with the captivating folk songs of former noisenik Natalie Mering. —Grayson Haver Currin
