Alpha Phi Alpha North Carolina District Step Show

When: Fri., Oct. 30 2015
ALPHA PHI ALPHA NORTH CAROLINA DISTRICT STEP SHOW

CAROLINA THEATRE, DURHAM | FRIDAY, OCT. 30

If you've never been to a college step show, picture a series of precision military drill teams that found the funk and then added generous helpings of stomp and gumboot dance in intricate, original synchronized routines. Black fraternities and sororities use the unique, exuberant dance form to celebrate and publicize their brother- and sisterhood, and the group exhibits it in yearly organized choreography competitions called step shows. In them, different fraternities and sororities compete to represent their school, or chapters from an individual organization meet at state conferences, hoping to move on to regional and national glory. The latter's the case this weekend, when squads from Alpha Phi Alpha chapters across the state (including Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill) compete before a panel of judges at this yearly district conference. The goal: Take the championship away from last year's winners at North Carolina Central University. Come for the high-energy dance; stay for the suspense before the judges announce their decision.

9 p.m., $20, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. Byron Woods
