Christmas is based on a story, and stories—whether of the Dickens variety or the one on TV with the kid who licks the frozen sign pole—are an integral part of the holiday tradition. Allan Gurganus, the celebrated N.C. author, created a tradition of his own with a story called "A Fool for Christmas." His narrator, the misfit manager of a shopping-mall pet store (blessed with the misfit name of Vernon Ricketts), meets a pregnant teenager who needs a friend, and something miraculous happens. Put it this way; there may not be room at the inn, but there's room at the mall. After Gurganus debuted it thirteen years ago in an NPR broadcast, response has been such that he continues to tell it, in ever-changing permutations, and the results are no less heartwarming. "A Fool For Christmas" has never been published; it's something you need to hear for yourself. —David Klein
