This perfect pairing—one of the truly brilliant billings of Duke Performances’ roots-focused summer series—links the 80-year-old folk and bluegrass icon Alice Gerrard with a performer half her age, the fiddler and singer Rayna Gellert. Both singers have spent decades in the trenches of some of America’s oldest music—Gerrard as a pioneering performer and acting historian, Gellert as the kid of another ace traditionalist and an enthusiastic collaborator in a wide range of projects. In recent years, they’ve both worked to update the ancient scripts they’ve inherited in wonderful ways. Gerrard’s Grammy-nominated 2014 album, Follow the Music, used a cast of local musicians to turn her songs outward and give folk new reach. Meanwhile, Gellert’s 2012 LP, Old Light: Songs from My Childhood & Other Gone Worlds, did much the same by giving familiar relics vivid new readings. Here’s a chance to watch the past arrive, blinking, in the present. —Grayson Haver Currin
