Alela Diane & Wild Divine, Parson Red Heads

When: Mon., June 20, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-10

During "Long Way Down," the best song on the third album by Oregon songwriter Alela Diane, a romance grows troubled. From the sound of it, the lust has gotten weak, and the emotions have mostly become a tangle of frustrations and discontent. But the love and affection are still there, coupled with an interest in seeing this thing through. "When the wine ain't sweet/ And the love's still true," sings Diane, "It's been done before/ You can work it through." That perspective on perseverance fits with Diane's career, too, as she's a singer-songwriter whose talent far outstrips her audience hitherto, the sort of writer who's still waiting on the right endorsement or name drop to be taken seriously by larger groups of listeners. Still, her new disc, Alela Diane & Wild Divine, is one of the year's best, and she deserves, at least, an ear. Opening are Southern California popsters the Parson Red Heads, who worked with Chapel Hill producer Chris Stamey on their upcoming disc, Yearling, due out in August on the Arena Rock label. —Grayson Currin
