Alcest, Emma Ruth Rundle, Inaenona

When: Thu., Oct. 15, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $18-$20
A decade ago, the French black metal project Alcest inspired intrigue and conjured mystery. With arching melodies, ecstatic rushes and florid textures, the project’s earliest albums emphasized a different strain of classical music than the type normally brandished by black metal bullies. Alcest felt romantic and gripping—magical, even. But in recent years, Alcest’s albums have trended soporific, with the hard edges softened by explicit shoegaze reverence and reference. Live, the music feels even more thin, the thrall that lingered reduced to an idle gaze. —Grayson Haver Currin
