Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Shamrockers

When: Fri., March 4, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $22-25

Scottish dance tunes gambol across the heath. In the hands of Alasdair Fraser, the fiddle floats and twists, unencumbered and effortless as it taps into the past. Fraser celebrates 18th-century fiddle-and-cello dance bands by partnering with cellist Natalie Haas. The pair's bobbing and weaving transforms into free-spirited possibility and improvisation. It's like an Appalachian journey that digs deep into Celtic roots. The duo's newest album, Highlander's Farewell, comes out later this month. Members of the Red Clay Ramblers open the evening as the appropriately if embarrassingly named Shamrockers. —Andrew Ritchey
