Al Strong Quartet

When: Tue., Feb. 14, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $15; $25/couple

A decade ago, nearly to the day, trumpeter Albert Strong played as a member of the North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble for the first annual CommuniMedia Jazz Festival at Hayti Heritage Center, sharing the stage with the husband-and-wife jazz outfit Eve Cornelious & Chip Crawford. Now, Strong and his partner, Cicely, spearhead a ripe Triangle jazz advocacy organization, The Art of Cool Project, and they've spent the past few months curating snazzy nightlife options for area listeners. This year, Strong returns to Hayti with his own quartet, headlining an intimate Valentine's Day concert for what he sees as "a fun challenge, musically, to try and connect with that kind of audience." You'd be romantically remiss not to consider this. —Eric Tullis
